"Training in the same building as a working newspaper is the best way to a career in journalism."
David Brothwell, Journalist Works graduate and letters editor of The ArgusFACILITIES
Train in a real newspaper office...
Journalist Works courses take place in a specially equipped journalism training centre in the main building of The Argus in Brighton. This means that not only are you immediately immersed in a busy daily newspaper environment, you also have the opportunity to contribute to the paper's news and features pages and website. You can also get work experience on the subs desk and news desk when you're ready.
The air conditioned training room has the latest teaching equipment: a 42" plasma screen TV, a DVD and a visualiser all linked to the tutor's PC so students can follow on-screen demonstrations of technology and watch Prime Minister's Question Time live. There are PCs for every student loaded with QuarkXPress, and access to further demonstrations of other applications like Adobe InDesign and Photoshop. Our journalism training centre has a large common room full of comfy sofas and a kitchen area with a fridge and microwave where you can make your own free tea and coffee.
The newspaper's cafeteria and common room is also open to students, so you can network with journalists while you eat, drink and relax between lectures. There are also plenty of water coolers and coffee machines to gather round to discuss the day's latest news.
...in one of the UK's liveliest media hubs
Brighton is carving out an international reputation as vibrant hub for creative and media industries. The city is also increasingly recognised as an exciting digital media cluster.
Networking opportunities abound along with a wide range of job possibilities for wordsmiths of all types and, of course, it's also just a fifty-minute train ride away from all the national newspaper and magazine offices in London.
You'll be based in the Argus building in the Hollingbury area of Brighton, from which an easy bus ride takes you to the beach and the city's famous shopping areas with quirky boutiques, cafes and top-class restaurants.
Closer to home, the building is situated on a retail park which has major chain stores and a handy supermarket just a five-minute walk away.
If you want to commute in for your course, you'll find the journalism training centre just off the A27 main Brighton and Hove bypass, so easily accessible by car from the whole of the southeast. It's also on the main bus route out of Brighton, which calls at Brighton and Hove railway stations.
