CAREERS

Journalist Works offers a fast track into a job in the newspaper industry.

There five main branches of journalism - newspapers, magazines, TV, radio and online - and you can start your career in any of them. We specialise in training people in newspaper, magazine and online journalism. Of course, many of the skills you will learn with us are transferable to the other branches too.

Our courses are accredited by the National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCTJ) which provides training schemes and qualifications for the best journalism training centres in the country. Its accreditation process is rigorous and its qualifications are recognised as an industry standard by editors and other employers.

There are a number of different ways to get NCTJ-qualified as a journalist and the route we use to get you trained for a career in journalism is intense and focused. It's called fast track pre-entry.

Pre-entry means that, rather than being recruited directly by a newspaper for on-the-job training (known as direct entry), you take a vocational course with a training provider such as Journalist Works. Fast track means you study intensively for ten weeks in the classroom plus work experience to gain your NCTJ pre-entry qualifications.

You will usually need a minimum of two A-levels to gain entry on a course, but sometimes a degree in the university of life means you are up to speed to start the course. We judge each case on its own merit so it's down to you to demonstrate to us that you have a good command of English, that you are genuine about your desire to get a job in this demanding and competitive industry and that you are prepared to work hard on the course.

Once you apply for our fast track NCTJ Certificate in Journalism (Sub-editing) you will be invited to come for a tour of The Argus and to have an informal chat about the course and your requirements. You will also be asked to sit the NCTJ Aptitude Test to make sure that this is the right path for you.
